Do you agree with Ilford Islamic Centre employing a British born,English speaking, Arabic Speaking Hafiz as Imam with a view to attracting the youth to the masjid, with a view to improving the level of education provided in the madrassah and with a view to articulating the beauty of Islam to the local community.
As the largest Masjid in Redbridge, the Centre realises that it has a duty to serve the need of the most vulnerable members of the community and the best way to do this is by connecting with them with an Imam who can inspire and enthuse and most importantly communicate with them in their native language, English. An increasing number of the congregation are not from a South Asian background and rely on English as the medium of communication.
Many of the youth also cannot speak their 'native' language and need an Imam who understand the problems of their generation. By engaging the services of a young Imam, Ilford Islamic Centre is attempting to do this.
It is important that the Imam is fluent in Arabic and is a Hafiz - again this is a pre-requisite in Ilford Islamic Centre's appointment.
It is important that the pearls in our society, the women are also attracted to the mosque. Ilford Islamic Centre have engaged the services of an Imam who has successfully achieved this in previous communities.
The feedback coming in about the need for an English speaking Imam has been overwhelming and deeply moving. It is clear that this is a conversation our community has been waiting to have for a long time.

Long overdue. We need an Imam who gets the struggles of growing up here in the UK. Great move by the center.

About time! Our youth are totally lost and this is the only way to keep them connected to the masjid. English is a must for the next generation.
