IITK should withdraw eviction notice to Dhobi community

My vote is for the little guy -- the dhobis in this instance.

If the reasons presented(Using space for academics) are legitimate , then they should be provided some alternate space to put up inside campus. But since , as per the report, the space occupied by community isn't large enough to build a new academic place, this authoritative and irrational notice should get revoked

Education institutes are supposed to lead the world in humanitarian values. Evicting the entire Dhobi community and depriving them of their livelihood is both senseless and unfair. When the institute acts like this, one wonders what values exactly does it want to inculcate in students?

From a current service availing student: I support the advancement of technology but will that be not scientific or rational if a pilot project of this idea (having complete machine driven washing) be implemented in a single hall. I think that will give a proper insight on feasibility, bill issues, lack of machines, maintenance issue or any other problem. After successful implementation in a particular hall, the administration could have asked (not demanded, (if this is for the student's community then kindly have the participation/view from the student's side)) the student community to shift towards this new practice. A simple problem with this idea is there are around 550 students in the hall-1, and currently, the working washing machines are around 5. 1 washing machine per 110 students (not feasible). And this is the case in every hall right now. This can be improved I know but first, identify these problems and resolve them for a particular hall, then go for complete eviction of the washermen or complete technology-driven solutions. Let the status-quo be maintained till then.

Can we get some alternative place for them

Its completely unethical and an attempt to wash away the inspiring cultures of IIT Kanpur. Instead of supporting our Dhobis , they have been given eviction notices. Saddened to know all these. IIT K administration should come out in their support, should help them and these notices should be withdrawn with an immediate effect.

These dhobis have served us at bare minimum costs with utmost convenience. There whole livelihood depends on us. Please don't displace them. The small area they occupy isn't consuming a lot.

I really don't understand what is wrong with alma mater. Instead of helping someone they are creating troubles. If this step is so necessary then must provide the alternative solution to those families. The institute is nt just meant to provide education to the students in fact proper fooding, neat and clean spaces, hygine etc. everything is required and for that you need other ppl... At one place institute is spending crores of rupees and at other place such stupid actions are being planned. This is ridiculous...

The Dhobis are part of IITK family. Their livelihood cannot be taken away from them.

It is disgraceful that the IITK wants to evict the Dhobi community that has served the campus for so long. IITK needs to fulfill its original agreement with the Dhobi community and should not prioritize unnecessary development over its moral obligations to them.
