IITK should withdraw eviction notice to Dhobi community

This is simply unacceptable. Hopefully, this petition gets the attention that it deserves, and the management takes the sensible decision of letting our Dhobis stay.

they are assets of IITK. So please don't remove them.

I feel disturbed that such a decision has been made...it makes no economic or social sense to disrupt the lives of these people who have no other means of survival..it should be a free market and every one should be allowed to choose what suits them best... Be it washing machines or consuming services offered by the dhobis dedicated...During my time at IITK, I never once faced any issues with the Dhoni who washed and ironed my clothes..plus the cost of his service was friendly on my pocket. It was their hard work which made them keep their jobs. Let us not snatch their only means of survival. Earnest request from an alumni of MBA batch 2008-10.

Why to evict poor and marginalized dhobis when the affordable faculty and staff are being given luxurious and more than required spaces to stay inside. Better evict the faculty and staff and relocate the dhobis in those houses. I believe the dhobis are doing a better job than many of those high profiles who are misusing and plundering this campus.

Against the abrupt and ruthless decision of sudden eviction. Gradual automation might work better.

Please don't evacuate.

The eviction notice should be withdrawn and the dhobis should continue to live there where they have been living for the past half century.

As an alum of a respected institute I find this kind of regressive reforms of the institute deeply concerning.

Now IIT Kanpur is behaving like a non-sensitive corporate body which do not respect human values. They must seriously reconsider their decision and behave like a progressive educational institute.

Dhobis are much better than many officials in iitk.At least they perform their duty honestly unlike many profs or officers, who are wasting govt funds

This will be a huge loss to IITK eco system.

Any responsible organization would arrange for the resettlement before eviction and reassignment to other employment before removing from jobs. Why are we acting like a private capitalist organization? Why are we selectively acting as a welfare organization to only academic members of the community? This is shameful :(

The dhobis are a part of the IIT community as much as the administration people. They provide an utmost necessary service at a very marginal cost compared to the open market. They should not be evicted at any cost. The administration and the elite community should understand that IIT Kanpur shall not become any more great by suppressing the under privileged.

This eviction notice seems arbitrary. Can faculty members be evicted from their residences, or offices and labs? I think the institute should be careful trying to just "evict"; it may become a practice! The dhobis provide an essential service, and the dhobi ghat has been created and organized for this purpose. So what prompts this?

Please withdraw order. Excellence means excellence in all dimensions not just academic.

This institution stands for better cause always.

Nobody thought about their working & living conditions, for so many years. May be Laundromet might have created this situation. These machines do not provide pressing. I had been using Dhobi service in Fifth Hall allowing me to conentrate on studies. Every Hall had a Barber shop. How about them ?
