Support Nebraska Identity Theft Legislation

We, the undersigned request the State of Nebraska Legislature to continue to work on and enact strong identity theft laws in 2009 to protect all consumers. We believe identity theft is a real threat to our family and loved ones. We recommend state laws be enacted or amended governing: 1. SECURITY FREEZE LAW AMENDED Placement fees for a security freeze should be made reasonable at $5 or less and the freeze should remain in place until the consumer decides to remove it. The current law sets the placement fee at $15 per credit bureau and allows the freeze to automatically expire after 7 years. 2. POLICE REPORTS It should be the right of any identity theft victim to request law enforcement documentation in the jurisdiction in which they live. 3. CONFIDENTIALITY AND PROTECTION OF THE SSN New standards and laws need to be adopted that dictate collection, use, display, security and confidentiality of the SSN by BOTH public and private entities. 4. SECURITY BREACH LAW AMENDED Consumers should be notified each and every time their personal information is lost or stolen by an entity. Certain entities should not be allowed to be exempt from notification. The current law allows entities to determine the likelihood a consumer\'s information may be used to commit fraud before notification and exempts some from having to notify consumers of a breach. It is time we give Nebraska consumers a voice. This petition and its comments will be sent to all 49 Nebraska State Senators during legislative session 2009. Our hope is that they will heed their constituent
