The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) licenses TV stations for 8-year terms. All Iowa stations must file for renewals by 1 Oct 2005. By law, to gain renewal, a station must demonstrate it has served \"the public interest.\" We believe that the Sinclair stations in Iowa ( including KGAN-TV2 in Cedar Rapids) fail this standard. Compared to other local stations, they provide poor local-issue reporting, poor children\'s programming, and even lack basic civility during their local news programming. We, the petition signers, ask the FCC to, at a minimum, hold hearings regarding these stations\' performance, rather than automatically renew their licenses.

We are Iowan for Better Local Television, a grass-roots, non-profit, and non-partisan group seeking to improve the quality of broadcast television.
By law, the broadcast airwaves belong to us, the public and, by law, broadcasters are to \"serve the public interest\" in return for their FREE use of the public\'s airwaves. But they are not doing so. Profit motives have squeezed out public-affairs programming. The tone of even news programming is sensational, shallow, and in the case of the 61 stations of Sinclair Broadcast Group, uncivil. The public deserves better!
