I SUPPORT PAID OFFICE HOURS FOR COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS ADJUNCTS!

My daughter is an adjunct instructor at colleges and universities in NY & NJ, and faces these same issues.

Thank you, Amy, for keeping us informed. We need to be united and show the board of trustees that we won't be forced into another substandard contract!

Work = pay

There is no reason why we shouldn't be paid for this. Classroom or office, we are still working with the students. The place makes no difference.

If you don't want to pay us for office hours, stop requiring them! You haven't got the facilities for us to conduct them anyway!

As an adjunct professor at several community colleges, time is money! We are in the office to provide a service for our students. We should be paid for that service, especially since it is time that we are REQUIRED to spend in the office!

Continuing this policy of LOW PAY in general and NO PAY for office hours is a great way for COC to drive quality adjunct faculty towards other institutions that actually value our services and work. This short term thinking is great for the "bottom line", no doubt, but is seriously jeopardizing the quality of instruction in the long term as full time instructors begin to retire and adjuncts, disillusioned and disenfranchised by COC's policies, find new homes where they are appreciated and compensated.

Just so you all know that office hours was part of a package deal in the negotiations of the 2011 contract. 2% increase in salary for office hours or only 1%. At that time the last president and negotiation team felt it was in the best interest to take the deal to get any significant wage increase. As always you as members need to speak up and contest when you do not agree and when this went out to the membership it was voted on and the contract was ratified. This is why I call on all of you now as new President to step up and speak out so we can fight for paid office hours as we are in negotiations for our contract now. Your voice is so IMPORTANT more than ever NOW!! Please help together we can make changes!

I still never understood how we got here anyway. I know we supported it, but I was UNCLEAR it was unpaid. I would have NEVER supported it originally.

I get paid by the Los Angeles Community College District for office hours and I strongly feel that COC adjuncts get paid for their office hours as well. I go to CCC an hour early for office hours twice a week before my classes start. It is fair for us to get paid.

Free Office Hours? I was surprised to realize we are expected to work for free!

I believe all work hours should be paid. What is the reason we are not getting paid for office hours in the first place?

In this age of electronic communication, I spend far greater than an hour just answering emails daily [at all hours of the day/night]. In addition to the curriculum writing, building the online classroom, and grading that is uncompensated.

Our highest possible pay at COC is entry level pay at LACC so we definitely need to be compensated somewhere.

I don't understand the logic behind requiring but not compensating for office hours.
