The prosecution could not have made a stronger case, and they failed to convince the jury that a crime was committed. A new trial will not change the strength of the prosecutor's case. I do not wish to see another trial in this situation.

I feel that law enforcement should be able to perform their jobs as they are trained when their lives are in danger. I also feel the judge has no balls and should have thrown the case out of court with the evidence provided. The world is tired of the black people getting their way and not abiding by the laws. The family has already received 2.25 million dollars for the death of their drop out college student who would still be alive if he would have listened to the officers in the first place and not rushed toward them.

While an unfortunate outcome, where no one is a winner - another court case will unlikely yield a unanimous decision. Clearly, the question that comes into plain view is: did Officer Kerrick feel his life was at risk after being charged by Ferrell? If I were a juror that would be enough doubt for me. Further, this was at night were close quarters contact with what Kerrick thought was an assailant is chaotic. Most of us will never have a clue how we might respond in that situation. Ferrell's family has settled for $2.2M which brings some level of justice for the family, while recognizing it won't bring him back from the dead. Even with a loose conviction of Kerrick, I assure you such a verdict will get tied up in appeals. Let's put this to rest and spend the energy and funding to better train our officers and the community on how to respond when law enforcement is engaged.

I support Officer Kerrick. There should NOT be another retrial.
Justic has been served; 8 of 12 jurors found Officer Kerrick NOT guilty.

well for one thing , it took two grand jury's to try him, i think that and a trial shold be enough.

I am not signing this petition because I believe Kerrick is innocent. I am signing it because a man was tried by a jury of his peers and they were unable to unanimously decide his guilt. Both sides had the opportunity to present their side and supporting evidence. However, that justice system says the burden is on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. They failed to do so. It is not up to the defense to prove his innocence. A hung jury in and of itself does not warrant a retrial. Was there a problem with the jury? Is there new evidence? The Ferrell family has had a tragic loss of their loved one in the most horrible circumstances. But our justice system does not say keep on trying until you get a conviction.

His life has already been ruined and the other family has been paid off. He was obviously set up. I think the family needs to give the money back but we know that's not going to happen

I don't understand why he was charged in the first place. Wasn't he doing his job? Should we take handguns away from the police to make this a safer community? Come on man!

The law states that the prosecution must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. The trial is over. There is clearly reasonable doubt. Officer Kerrick's testimony was that he feared for his safety and/or his life. Any reasonable person would have feared for their safety in that situation. The prosecution had no evidence to contradict that. That is reasonable doubt. Witnesses testified that Mr. Ferrell was on top of officer Kerrick during the last few shots indicating that Mr. Ferrell continued advancing after the first several shots were fired. This is clearly self defense or at the very least it is reasonable doubt of the charge. It is a tragic situation regardless but Officer Kerrick had every right to protect himself.
