Our property taxes here are already sky-high. The Council needs to be transparent about what this will mean to property owners.

I have pointedly written and spoken out on this issue in the past. Yes, what the city officials, especially including the council, is doing regarding the property/zoning revisions is outright theft as well as a clear violation of individual rights and should certainly be opposed. And the fiscal mismanagement and quest for ever increasing taxes from the citizen-chattel is par for the course for any government operation which imposes itself, by force, as a third party between consumers (the citizens) and producers (those that actually provide the roads, parks, security services, medical care, etc.) Were you expecting something different? We lost this battle a long time ago when we didn't stand up and fight back as zoning/building codes were initially introduced. We lost the battle when we said it was OK for government to be in the land management business with ownership of roads and parks. We lost the battle when we accepted government takeover and control of all utilities; when we acceded them the right to determine who picked up our trash; when we sat back as they regulated which phone, cable or internet company would be allowed to provide us service; when we allowed them to mandate that we wear a seat belt or bike helmet. Hell, we lost the battle when we allowed them to tell us whether and what sort of bag we would be allowed to use! In ever one of these, and a thousand other cases, we explicitly told these totalitarian wannabes that sit in office or are the hired guns throughout the government bureaucracy, that we accepted their use of force in controlling and dictating every small aspect of our lives. We told them that we accepted their rule and would passively acquiesce to their commands. So why should we now expect them to defer to our concerns? No, we lost this particular battle long before it started. This is just one more pile of crap that is going to be shoved down our throats because we accept the underlying premise that these "officials"

We need more businesses to help with funds not homeowners. Lets get our downtown attractive enough for businesses to come in and set up.

As a very senior citizen, the thought of higher real estate taxes or taxes of any kind that can price me out of my home is frightening.

City government of Mercer Island: Please learn to live within your means. At a time of record income you still can't meet your 'wants'? As I've taught my children, prioritize your needs - then your wants and you work from the bottom up on your list until you balance your books. Do it now and quit looking to tax yet more! There are no temporary taxes. They never die.

While a select few are pushing these changes through without considering the public opinion, the market has spoken...The newly developed larger homes sell quickly, raising everyone's property values. These code changes will make Mercer Island a less desirable place to live and build and will hold property values down, while other locales are going up. New construction and remodeling raises everyone's values. These code changes would discourage the practice completely.

We are new residents to MI. It was very disheartening to read about the budget deficit. I understand there needs to be a balance for growth on an island, but increasing the burden on home owners by virtue of restricting strategic and intentional development is sad. Perhaps I don't know both sides of the story, but we need to be very wise about the diversity of our revenue streams. Thank you.

Dear City Council Members: Your new residential code restricts the height of homes to 30 feet above grade. Yet anyone can plant a tree which can grow a 100 feet and completely block a neighbor's view. Your tree restrictions are overbearing. Any homeowner should have the right to pay to remove any tree over 35 feet blocking his view. Your expenditures are rising too quickly due to payroll and benefits which are rising beyond inflation. Cut your pay and benefits.

Dear Mercer Island City Council, I think Mercer Island already has a bunch of hard regulations on new building. We really need more time to understand the complex code that is proposed before it can be put in effect.

I am strongly against this effort to restrict my rights to improve my home. I am also opposed to effectively thwarting most new construction on the island by making it almost impossible to build new homes due to this onerous proposal. Please deny this proposal from taking shape in any form.

I support home owner rights and measured growth in the commercial center and for residences on Mercer Island. I was a 15 year resident and currently have many friends who call MI home.

We will need to create value instead of exploiting the rights of the Islanders. We've paid enough taxes.

City Council - PLEASE take your time, do not rush through this code, yes it's been 8 months, yes there have been lots of opportunities for public comment, but the code is complex and the timeline dragged on because this isn't an easy task, you need to understand the impact of this code financially, administratively and in many other ways before voting on it. Don't rush. Don't make bankrupting Mercer Island your legacy. Take your time.
