We are now empty nesters and we're often not home or traveling and yet our water usage bill has tripled! Something is not right.

We were billed for extra water for a month we were out of town 16 days.
Plumber found no leaks.

My bill has more than doubled. As a single person, there is no way I have used the amount of water claimed.

My average water consumption for 2013/2014 was approximately 11,000 gallons in the summer. This year it is 30,000 gallons. Austin Water needs to explain to me how this is possible.

Our water usage per the City increased 43,000 gallons in August compared to July. This translates to 72 gallons/hour. I've clocked my meter to prove we do not have a leak. The City has actually escalated my case and I am waiting for a supervisor to contact me to schedule a Meter Accuracy Test. Regardless, this is obviously a wide spread problem and something needs to be done to systematically change their calculations. It's not feasible for them to come check all our meters for pressure accuracy!

I too was stunned with my last water bill. My usage was six times higher than the previous month. My front yard is xeriscaped and the grass in my back yard is golden.

My neighbors' usage has increased three-fold in one month, even when some of them were out of town, they don't have pools, they don't irrigate, and they have brown lawns to prove it. This is going to play out like a rate-case; but the problem is likely not the rate, but rather, a SNAFU in the metering. The bills I have seen reflect impossible usage. There are cases all over the country relating to improper reading of the new "smart meters." I'm wondering if the City of Austin, who not so coincidentally also took over the water utility in our neighborhood recently, had installed new meters at the affected homes. Regardless, my neighbors are being hosed--no pun intended.
