In 2008 proposition 2 (a prop that enforced slaughterhouses to increase their cage sizes so that animals were able to move around more freely) passed with an overwhelming 63% rate of approval. In 2015, slaughterhouses in California will be forced to increase the sizes of their cages.

Although Slaughterhouses will soon be required to supply animals with larger cages, there are currently no laws in place that protect animals in slaughterhouses from receiving inhumane forms of euthanasia. Animals are unprotected from the worst forms of cruelty. As a result, pigs, male calves, cows, chickens, turkeys and male chicks are being physically abused, mutilated and inhumanely slaughtered in slaughter houses through out California.

Undercover animal rights advocates have documented films portraying slaughterhouse employees kicking, beating, and shocking animals while they are still alive. Animals are typically slaughtered while they are hung upside down, bleeding out through slit-throats and are often still alive while their hides are tore from their bodies or their feathers are plucked out.

These actions should not be allowed in a civilized society. Animals that have nervous systems and feel basic human emotions like fear and pain, should not be killed mercilessly in assembly lines as though they were inanimate objects.

Since meat is a thriving industry it is impossible to outlaw slaughterhouses in the state of California, but it is possible to regulate the treatment of the animals within slaughterhouses.

Sign this petition and enforce the use of humane forms of euthanasia. Slaughterhouses will no longer be allowed to use physical force as a means to slaughter animals. Slaughterhouses will be required to administer painless forms of euthanasia to sedate and then overdose each animal. An expert will also be required to check for vital signs before the animals are processed for their meat.

The fiscal effects are currently unknown
