To Dr. Leitman, Dr. Davis, and Dr. Charney,

Recent changes to House Staff benefits will have a profound negative financial impact on many of us. We are being asked to contribute several thousand dollars over the course of the year for the same plans that previously had zero employee contribution. Making such a big change to the health insurance policy in the middle of residency, without discussion and with short notice, reflects a lack of support on the part of the health system for the house staff, who spend an extraordinary amount of time and energy making it possible for the health system to run. We make at least a three year commitment to work here and do not have the ability to seek employment elsewhere like other employees. We are requesting that in order to support the health and well-being of house staff who make significant sacrifices to the benefit the health system, house staff health plans continue to have zero employee contribution.

This is a huge hit to our take home pay right when rent in the city is already killing me. Really unfair to spring this on us without any warning.

It is true that the cost of healthcare is rising and that those increases surely translate to a significant expense for Mt Sinai as an employer. However, passing on so much of that expense to the house staff seems frankly unjust for the reasons already stated in this petition. In addition, these increases in the cost of our insurance are equivalent to a massive pay decrease. For the equivalent coverage, my own family will now have to pay a premium just under $12K/year. The pay raises of the prior two years acknowledged that the house staff were not being fairly compensated. These current changes in premiums, for many of us, completely undo those raises.

I personally feel that these are reasonable changes to make to our benefits. However, these were not communicated well. And, I agree with the central point of the petition that it is problematic to make changes like this after we have begun our multi-year commitment to a residency.
