The exact wording of the House Joint Resolution-3 bill (a proposed amendment to the constitution of the state of Indiana) is as follows:
Only a marriage between one (1) man and one (1) woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Indiana. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized.
By signing this petition, we are
expressing our discontent for HJR-3. We, as current and
potential voters for the districts surrounding Elkhart County, urge our
representatives to reconsider their stance on HJR-3. It is not only
unconstitutional and discriminatory, but places a cultural-political identity
on gay-lesbian members of Indiana. As the Goshen College community in Indiana, we will keep
expressing our discontent by choosing to live in a state that allows equality.
We are grateful that the Indiana Senate struck down the second sentence, but it
is not enough, the entire amendment must be voted down. By signing, we agree
for our names to be sent to Indiana Representatives in order to show the
importance of denying this bill its vote. We will not vote for any
representative that supports this bill and we will continue to increase
awareness so that every representative becomes aware of the public discourse
the passing of this bill will create.
Love is love. Indiana needs to get with the times already.
