In this life as we know it, Francisco Varatojo was a dedicated man with the focused goal of making life healthier, happier and more adventurous for his fellow citizens. "Bom exemplo e boas razões avassalam os coracões," goes the Portuguese proverb in regard to those that are examples of their passion and help others. Francisco Varatojo was such a man. His light was bright, his vision bold and his love embracing. We honor the life of love and dedication he lived with a fierce passion for celebrating his influence; an influence that was profound, pervasive and still resonant.

Francisco Varatojo - Director of the Instituto Macrobiótico de Portugal passed away in a tragic accident Thursday, July 6th.
Francisco has been acknowledged for many years as one of the most qualified macrobiotic counsellors and regularly gave seminars throughout the world.
Francisco began studying Macrobiotic in 1977 and together with his wife Geninha Horta Varatojo was the founder of the Kushi Institute of Portugal, after having studied at the Kushi Institute in Boston.
Clearspring Chairman Christopher Dawson was a close friend and has worked together with Chico since 1985 to promote macrobiotics.
“You knew no boundaries, social, economical or political. Your diary was always packed with appointments and health counselling schedules. A family man at heart, you and Eugenia you have brought four wonderful children into this world. Their respect for your passion for One Peaceful World through dietary change has led them to follow in your footsteps. You loved Rice Balls/Japanese Onigiri and Kuzu. You changed the lives and direction of many. A man with a humble destiny accepting every challenge in your stride. God Bless You.”
