I agree that Honors classes serve a middle ground student and allow for chance to improve GPA and add a higher level learning without being in a college level course. Not all students are ready for that but need more than level. This is a disservice to our children.

Please bring these courses back to GOHS. This helps my daughter compete, GPA-wise, with other high school graduates from other schools to be able to go to the college of her choice.

Accelerated learning should be an option for students even if they aren’t ready for college/AP courses yet. Everyone learns differently and our school has so many students that would benefit from Honors classes.

Not all students want to complete college in high school, but they also don’t want be bored in school all day barely learning in level classes. Honors classes fill this gap and help students stay engaged without being over worked while also balancing extra curricular activities.

Please do not take away honors level courses at the high school. This is going to impact those advanced students that are also involved in extracurricular activities and negatively affect their quality of life. My husband and I both have Masters degrees and definitely encourage academic excellence and hard work. Forcing the students to take either level course work or college level classes is terrible. Our current GOHS student did not want to play the numbers game and take all AP/DC courses. He opted to take honors level courses and supplement with AP/DC for the classes that complimented his strengths. He is not in the top 10% of the class, but is close. Removing honors classes will drive advanced students that want to play a sport, be involved in volunteer organizations, be involved in church activities and/or need to work a job to take level courses and will cost them their GPA and class rank. We have spoken to many students that stay up until 2am doing homework and that are incredibly stressed out with the college level course load. There are of course the students that can more easily handle AP/DC for all core classes and electives. The point the parents are trying to get across- is that the students should have a choice and be able to structure their schedule to best fit their abilities and lifestyle.

Please continue to offer honors classes at Grand Oaks HS. This affects many kids futures, particularly those going to colleges in other states.

We were very disappointed with the choices offered in 9th grade while signing up our daughter for classes next school year. We looked for honors courses and were forced to choose between AP and Levels. We felt we were not quite ready to jump into AP classes, but also need more than Level- hoping for a middle ground with honors classes.
