Coach J’s first year to bring volleyball to Tarkington was my freshman year. I won’t name the year!
I love her as a sister. I have a lot of respect for her.

Proud to say that all 3 of my daughters played volleyball for her, all making Varsity by their sophomore year. They all received individual athlete awards, getting their names on plaques. They all had the opportunity to hold a District Champion title their whole high school career, many of which were Undefeated titles. They all experienced Playoffs every year, with my middle daughter going to State her Junior & Senior years. My older 2 have graduated and both were both offered multiple volleyball scholarships.
My youngest daughter is a senior and was unable to play this year due to a major ACL knee surgery. Even after making a difficult decision to leave the team, being unable to play, Coach Johnson still recognized my daughter at the Athletic Banquet this month. I was not there, but I was told by several people that she recognized her as being a long time athlete who worked hard to get where she is today, and what a contribution she was to the team all these years. I cried when I found out. Most coaches would not have done that. However, Coach recognized my daughter as one of her athletes that she has watched grow since she started summer camp in 3rd grade and club volleyball in 5th grade. Coach wanted her to receive the recognition that she deserved for many, many years of hard work. That meant more to my daughter and I than I could possibly say.
I believe after all the many years of coaching, hundreds of wins, and numerous playoff titles, Coach Denise Johnson deserves her recognition!

It's good common sense to name a gym after a woman who has given her whole adult life to the T.I.S.D. sports program. It's sad it took a petition to bring awareness of Coach Johnson's merit.

This is truly the most notable way to recognize Coach Johnson's contribution to not only the Athletic Department at TISD, but the hundreds and hundreds of lives she has impacted there as well.

There is to be discussion and review to determine guidelines and standards set to the naming of facilities and buildings in Tarkington ISD. I SAY Coach Denise Johnson IS THE STANDARD to which all Coaches and educators should strive to be. Setting "guidelines" is easy,.....look at Coach J's career achievements, team records, and Legacy of Champions. Tarkington has been blessed to be the place she calls home & where she has stayed dedicated and loyal.
It's time for us to honor her! I do not believe someone has to retire or pass away to be honored! Honor earned, let's do this!!
Well deserved!
