Looking from the 'outside' in I do wonder why the American flag should fly at all on Hokule'a - why not just the Hawaiian flag - apologise if I offend Hawaiians but as a Maori our sovereignty linked to flag-flying should be symbolised by our own flags

Hawaii has not been country of it's own for over 200 years.
See before the United States made the mistake of taking over the territory from Great Britain and before Great Britain discovered the sandwich islands then and only then was Hawaii a sovereign country.
I'm all for the United States Government giving Hawaii back to the people, so they become a sovereign country.
That would be based on the United States pulling all Military instillation off all the islands and moving the Pacific command to a more important area.
Also not allowing Hawaii to go back as territory at all.
Pulling all US Government offices out as well,
Within 10 years maybe the most 20 years Hawaii would be a third world nation, with the main income being tourism.
Let's not forget the state of the world is in, good chances Hawaii being a visit at own risk country.
With that being stated there would be an excodus of major businesses leaving the islands, not wanting to take a chance of radicals disrupting the government

To Fly the occupier's flag on a symbol of the Kingdom, is wrong and insulting. Hawai'i was illegally overthrown in 1893, but that did not extinguish its sovereignty and independence as a nation-state

We are an indegineous Native bloodline & our islands were never annexed in 1898 but we were illegally occupied by the U.S. Marines by forcing our Queen to leave as a prisoner back to their country in the United States until she passed on...
Not by choice. Hawaiʻi is an occupied country due to the historical failure to ratify an annexation treaty in the U.S. Senate. Just because the website is oblivious or in denial of that doesn't negate the fact. A congressional joint resolution is domestic legislation incapable of annexing the territory of a foreign country and acquiring its sovereignty. If that were possible, there would be no such thing as occupation.
