Deanna Whelan is a contract instructor at both Carleton University and UOttawa. For those who have been fortunate enough to have her as a professor know how dedicated she is to teaching and ensuring her students are successful. Her energetic personality is contagious; she provides students with the resources and tools necessary to be successful in a given course. The type of professor a student has heavily influences their outcome in that course. Therefore as students, we should be given an opportunity to have a say in which professors lecture us. There are currently many permanent professors at our institutions who make it very evident that they themselves do not want to be there, yet contract instructors such as Deanna are being left behind. Having Deanna as a contract instructor rather than a professor or lecturer is preventing students from reaching their full potential and success throughout their years of academia. Contract instructors are restricted on the courses they can teach and cannot supervise students who wish to complete their theses. One example to illustrate how much students favour Deanna is during the summer when she teaches PSYC 3000. This course always fills up rapidly compared to the other course, which is identical, however taught by a different professor. The school will actually prevent students from registering into her class in order to fill up the other section. There are several reasons why we as students prefer to take our courses with Deanna. While we continue to be financially burdened with tuition, we should, at the least, be given a say in who teaches our courses. Let YOUR voice as a student be heard. I have been reading your messages about how much Deanna transformed your experience in the classroom. It is clear that we are not just asking for a new hire but for the university to recognize the quality of instruction we actually deserve. We are preparing to bring these testimonials directly to the department heads to show them exactly what is being ignored.

Seeing this kind of energy for Deanna confirms everything I have felt during my time in her classroom. It is clear that so many of you have also experienced the impact of her dedication and deserve to have that level of teaching permanently at this school.

The practice of hiring contract instructors, paying them poorly, and not providing them with benefits or long-term stability is disgusting and a reflection of the increasing corporatization of our universities. I believe this is an issue that more students need to care about and get involved in, so I am glad that this petition has been started. Thank you
She stepped in for one of my classes when my prof was sick, most interesting and engaging class of the semester
BEST prof I have ever had, tough but fair, thorough with her explanations and never makes students feel silly with their questions. I've taken multiple classes with her, and recommend her to everyone I know in PSYC. HIRE HER, this school needs her.
I never had Deanna personally, but she sounds like an amazing professor, who is not only dedicated but works incredibly hard to have her students succeed. I hope that we as students at Carleton are able to make her a full time professor before another university takes her from our students.
As a student with severe difficulties in math (i.e. I almost didn't go to university because mixed math was too much of a struggle), Deanna told e exactly what I needed to hear and helped me come up with a plan to succeed. She is an excellent teacher and a wonderful person!
She's the best!!!

Deanna taught me an advanced psych stats course. Amazing professor! Everyone in my class loved her as our instructor. She should be given a faculty member position (at the very least an assistant professor) in the dept of psych.
