Hineshaw - Rosenwald Building Preservation Effort

Future Liberty County education museum and conference center.

I would love to see this school brought back to life with knowledge, laughter, love and teaching.

Hineshaw means so much to so many people that began their educational journey here. We must preserve this school for all that it means to former students and teachers, as well as its historical significance to the community and beyond.

Hinesville-Shaw Rosenwald School is an important resource in African Americans' historical quest for racial equality in Liberty County, GA.

My mother E. Delean Smith Taylor attended Hineshaw as did my Uncle/Godfather and grandmother. It was located behind my grandma’s house in a neighborhood bearing my great grandmother’s name. I have two history degrees. I have spoken at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History founded by Carter G. Woodson. My mother wrote several stories of her memories of Rebecca Street. I am working on writing my stories and collecting oral histories. I have over 500 documents on the family. Sadly my mother and I have been excluded from our land and history. This breaks my heart daily. Other family members have also been ostracized but not like my mother and I. I hope as this is my heritage I will have the opportunity to work on this project. I am young but I can contribute too.

I attended Hineshaw for my Kindergarten and 6th grade years. So many memories of this school. Please preserve this piece of Hinesville history.

A community that cares about preserving its past teaches children the importance of knowing history in order to build the future. Please act to preserve this important and precious remnant of Liberty County African American history.

I attended Hineshaw, met childhood friends who became lifelong friends and was taught by educators who cared. The resources were limited but, the staff made due. Hineshaw made a difference in my life and many others. The landmark is historic and I vote that it be preserved.

As a descendant of slave holders in Liberty County I urge you to preserve this monument to the anti-racist work of Julius Rosenwald and others whose generosity enabled generations of former slaves and their descendants to receive a sound education. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed the Rosenwald School on it 11 Most Endangered Places list. Let's save it and find a good use for it!

Preserving the Rosenwald Schools not only provides a tangible link to our community’s and nation’s past but the buildings, which were often well- designed with plenty of natural light, can function as excellent community/school centers.

I will wager that you know someone, still alive today, who went to a Rosenwald school.

This is a part of Liberty County (Black) History. Everyone that attended Hineshaw need to support this.

I went to Hineshaw from 1962-1969 (1st thru 7th grade)....it would be a travesty of monumental proportions to demolish that much history
