MCPASD Internal Boundary Committee

The following residents of High Point Estates and Valhalla Valley (neighborhood 69 as defined by the Internal Boundary Committee) would like to petition the MCPASD Internal Boundary Committee to leave neighborhood 69's attendance for Elementary School at Elm Lawn Elementary and for Middle School at Kromrey in its recommendations for the Board of Education on changes to the elementary and middle school boundaries.

The option of switching attendance to West Middleton would create a longer commute to and from school for this neighborhood thus creating a barrier to student and family engagement. In addition this option would place children into a school that is projected to have overcrowding issues in the near future creating a significant building utilization issue.

Separately, any consideration of moving the attendance for this neighborhood from Kromrey to Glacier Creek for middle school would significantly increase commuting time, creating serious impacts on current students as well as increasing student and family engagement concerns.

Thank you for your consideration and thank you for all of the work you are doing in creating boundary recommendations for the Board of Education.

Updates

July 29, 2019

I have spent my evenings looking at the commute maps and tracking the potential overcrowding at West Middleton. It is clear that moving our neighborhood would disrupt our children's daily lives and limit our ability to stay involved in the school community. Do not let them overlook the impact these shifts have on our families.

Seeing so many neighbors speak up for our kids makes me realize how much we all value these established school communities. This surge in support proves that we are not alone in wanting to protect our children from unnecessary commutes and overcrowded classrooms.

The much longer commute to Glacier Creek would be a significant strain on families in this neighborhood and an unreasonable burden for the children. Longer commutes invariably put children at increased risk for traffic accidents, inadequate sleep, etc. Thank you for considering this impact on our kids!

The topic of changing high point school bundary was discussed in previous years. There were a lot of good discussions with same reasons as mentioned in this petition letter which lead to the decision of no change. The uncertainty associated with continuing to bring the same topic back significantly impacts the life of the families and students in the neighborhood.

I have been an active volunteer in both Elm Lawn as well as on the PTO board at Kromrey and very much prefer to keep my children in the exceptional atmosphere of these two respective schools.

Having children who attended W. Middleton and Glacier Creek prior to the current boundaries I can attest to the difficulties and challenges of the travel time to those schools, particularly Glacier Creek, and the lack of engagement in extra-curricular activities as well as parental involvement in the schools.

Please leave our boundaries as is! We are already a fair distance from our school and kids' friends. We don't want to make the distance even further! It would greatly impact their involvement in after school extra curricular activities, given longer commute times. I volunteer quite a lot at the elementary school. Staff know me, and I have built a relationship with many students. Moving my middle school student in 6th grade to a whole new school with no familiar faces would be devastating to her! I want their school years to be happy ones. Kids have enough challenges as it is, without adding more uncertainty.

The distance from HP Estates to Glacier Creek is not very manageable. Parents in this neighborhood are very involved with Kromrey activities because it is not too far of a drive, that would likely change if they had to make excursions out to Cross Plains. Further, the majority of Middleton neighborhoods have to be closer to Glacier Creek than HP Estates.

Please keep our boundaries as is. Elm Lawn and Kromrey are the only closest options for us. Both West Middleton and Glacier creek will be very far for the kids and it will very difficult for the parents and kids to manage the after school activities, pick up, drop off etc.. Also proximity plays a major role for kids to create much connections to their school friends after school.
