HESI Petition: Students of Duquesne University School of Nursing

It is still happening in 2025. Guess Duquesne is more concerned with a percentage then a student's mental.

It continues to this day…7/01/25!

Duquesne should emphasis in their orientation with parents & students that the HESI test is required BEFORE the student would be able to take the NCLEX. That requirement seems unethical just to make their stats better.

The HESI should only get the score at most to 800 - this test seems very unfair in my opinion

I attend jersey college and they Re with holding me from graduating my LPN program because i didnt pass only the HESI exit exam but passed the ATI….

Students should not have to pass this exam

This exam should not be used to deny degree after completed work. Thankful that was not the policy at the university where I received my BSN.

I'm at Herzing University and dealing with this same issue. These abusive exams need to go!

My daughter attends Eastern Kentucky University. The KBN no longer allows them to use the HESI as a graduation requirement, but the Eastern Ky Univ has re-formatted a 2 credit hour class taken in their last semester as an indicator of first time NCLEX pass rates. The NSC 492 class is set up such a way to set up students for failure. It has become the new "high-stakes" way to hold back students from graduation and taking the NCLEX.

ADVENTHEALTH UNIVERSITY is doing the SAME EXACT thing to their students!!!!! Withholding our degrees because of the HESI and my school is saying there is nothing they can do.

The HESI doesn't help anyone pass the NCLEX. Students/families are paying thousands of dollars to go to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and be denied graduation over ONE EXAM. If anyone wanted to spend thousands of dollars, then why are the students taking all the rest of the courses when ONE exam says they can graduate or not. They need to get rid of the HESI benchmark and GET RID OF THE APEA benchmark for graduate students! You can pass the class, but still not graduate because of ONE exam that does not help the student be successful on the boards as an undergrad and as a graduate student.

Not a student just against the HESI being misused in any form at any time

I don’t even go to this school but recently failed HESI after successfully passing all my classes all semester. I’m against it I am filing An appeal against my school .

I support the students and encourage the leadership of Duquesne to fix this problem. Award the students their diplomas and revoke the use of the HESI exam as a graduation requirement. As a catholic school you are called to a higher human compassion and principles and should not be driven by the money.

I support the students’ petition. It seems like the HESI exit requirement administered by Duquesne is arbitrary and based on self preservation. Duquesne must have a lack of confidence in their nursing curriculum or their professors as they rely on a standardized test known as HESI. Duquesne should award diplomas to those students only being held back because they did not pass the HESI. Further, Duquesne faculty are the experts about their school and their nursing program. Therefore, Duquesne should also be transparent to all new prospective nursing students and prominently post that there is a 25% chance they will not graduate at the end of 4 years regardless of their academic accomplishments or scores. They should inform prospective students that a HESI exit exam will be given at the very end for their 4 year curriculum and if students do not pass with a score that is arbitrarily set by Duquesne they will not graduate and potentially will be dismissed from the program with nothing to show for their 4 years of work and tens of thousands of dollars of tuition debt.

As a 1996 graduate of Rutgers University with a bachelor's in nursing degree, I stand to support this petition. After passing my NCLEX exam it was very difficult to find a job at that time which inspired me to go further through chiropractic school. But I will always be a nurse and will always be behind any worthwhile cause.
