The council in my town decided to save money by, rather than trying to paint over the quick throw ups, giving our underpass to be a free wall and the public love it! Quality production pieces from top artists in their and now people use it rather than avoid it. This has now led to a full on paint festival in the town people appreciate the art so much!

It would brighten the place up, give people something creative to work on, develop pride in the local area.

With some of the street art talent available in the U.K., this could be absolutely amazing!

This is a great idea. The main reason I believe this having dedicated walls for street artists. Means harsher penalties for taggers.

I helped work on the Newmarket road street art project a few moons ago, but since it's demolition the amount of free public art of this nature around the city has dwindled dramatically. The council spends money cleaning the underpass on a fairly regular basis, but it's always remained an eyesore. Street and graffiti artists are often overlooked, but their massive strength is that they put art out there for the public with no thought of reward or return-only to have their art seen and admired by passers by. This is a great opportunity for Cambridge to bring out some of it's best artists for the public to admire, and without fear of being punished the art will continuously change and stay of a high calibre-a far cry from the eyesore this underpass has been for many years. Not everyone thinks to go to a gallery or museum-times are changing, people are busy, people are saving their money for the essentials rather than indulgence. Cambridge is expensive. Give something back to the community and you will feel its rewards ten fold.

Maybe you can get some community or youth groups involved too! Open walls are great because they are ever changing as new artists come in or old artists try out new styles. It would be a great place for artists to practice and improve!
