E2SSB 5439, commonly known as the Becca Bill, is Washington State's truancy law. Nicknamed for a girl who ran away and soon after was murdered. The Becca Bill was created to protect other children, like Becca, but also to keep them in school for educational purposes. Unfortunately this law has neither helped runaways, nor their school absences. But it has caused Washington to have the most jailed kids in the nation.

Please help keep Washington's youth safe!

Updates

May 15, 2017

I have been reading your stories about children trapped in the juvenile system instead of finding the help they actually need. It reinforces my belief that we must dismantle this cycle before another kid pays the ultimate price.

Seeing this kind of momentum feels like a weight finally lifting off my shoulders. I never imagined so many people would join me in fighting a law that has hurt so many families for far too long.

Children should not be jailed gor missing school. There are so many better ways to help someone struggling with school or life!

My son spent time in detention for missing class and it literally ruined his life. Treating kids like criminals for truancy is insane. Fix this broken system.
