It's a sad day in America when local business are defeated by the county they are trying to occupy. My husband and I are young parents to two girls, and have just bought our first house in Palm Coast. We have recently opened a yard art and statue company called Garden of Needin' on the corner of US1 and 206. Where we also are known for selling our RAW LOCAL HONEY and Home made jelly, spices and jams, you may recognize us by the big purple aluminum chicken on the corner. My husband's grand father is the owner of the old honor system stand out on 100 toward Palatka. My husband works 7-7, 7 days a week. He is a very dedicated and hardworking young man. We have had much success at our new business and have finally gotten comfortable. For about two months the county of St. John's has selectively enforced codes and guidelines that are impossible to follow. And although we have committed to "playing ball" with them and done whatever we must do to fall within their guidelines, they have refused to allow us to do business here. They insist our property is not zoned for the business we are doing. Although, every single other business surrounding us is doing similar sales, with the same zoning, they have all been "grandfathered" in and that does not apply to us. They come to our shop on a daily basis and take our signs down, and harass us in front of our customers. We pay our taxes, we pay our bills, we have good intentions and still have been shot down numerous times. We paid a $3,000.00 application to apply for an appeal on the zoning decision, where we were denied. They gave us a list of business sales we can participate in for this zone, most of them being sex shops, bong stores, liquor departments, and other "acceptable" companies. None of which we carry an inventory for. It does however, say we may open a nursery. We were working on combing our Yard art with a nursery when we were also shot down, although that is what this property is zoned for. We have tried every way possible to please the County of St. John's and have been forced to leave in 15 days. Where my husband and our children will have no income or way to sell the thousands of dollars in inventory we have. We regret ever coming to St Augustine, where they do NOT support local businesses in any way shape or form. We have hopes that God has more for us on the other side of all this heart ache, and that we may find another place to call home. I hope everyone on the Board of St Johns County sleeps well every night and cashes their hourly pay check every Friday, while my husband and I toss and turn endless nights hoping we will find a solution . Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope it is shared throughout the entire state letting all future potential business owners know what they are getting themselves into when they enter a place like St Johns County.
