As a former dance instructor, gymnastics and cheer coach, college/competitive cheerleader, and Allstar/School cheer mom I can attest that Maddie deserves the opportunity to tryout with accommodations. She is not disabled, she merely has special abilities! The TRUE meaning of cheerleader has nothing to do with physical abilities, especially for her school. She is full of determination and spirit! By cheering competitively for 10 years, she has the experience needed to work with a team and to provide showmanship. If her school won't allow accommodations for the opportunity to have a level playing field at tryouts, they are doing a real injustice to their school and students. She wants to be a role model and leader, how many cheerleaders have a true love for it? Many girls who tryout just want to wear the uniform, be seen, and have the notoriety that comes with it. To Maddie it means so much more and that is why her school should be supporting her, not holding her back!

I think this is absolutely heartless and outrageous. There is no reason this sweet young lady should not be given the opportunity to cheer. Who in the world would it hurt? Wake up and look at the bigger picture here.. I am beyond disgusted and thankfull my children no longer attend GISD!

I hope she can get what she needs. I have a child that has been on a special needs team at Cheerforce. We tried out for high school and asked for other accommodations and we got nothing. He asked to be the mascot and for nothing. He finally gave up. He is a jr. this year, and his all stars team has disbanded. So sad. Good luck Madison. We are in Westminster California

This will be a learning experience for the cheerleaders - a chance for them to help someone less fortunate to succeed. Let Maddie cheer!

I find it reprehensible that a school district would be so callous. In my opinion, special athletes only add to the program. She should not need to try out, but at least they could make reasonable accommodation. I am both an all star and a high school cheer mom and I know that the high school would welcome such athletes, and if there were interest, our all star gym would have a team too.
