She definitely should get extra time to learn the cheer before tryouts, and you should be able to incorporate a physical education goal into her IEP that allows her extra time on certain assignments. Good luck Maddie! :)

I think she should have a spit on the team. The district should be able to accomodate her in some way.

while I appreciate your opinion Im not sure you saw she has cheered on an all star cheer team for 10 years im not asking that she be PUT on the team she has to work for everything she gets just like any other Athlete but im asking for a little extra time to learn and perfect her routine. She tried out last year with no accomodations and she did not make it so I wanted to give her a fighting chance this year because without them she definitly will not make it and I will be setting her up for failure again and it really hurts her confidence. But she understand she has to WORK for everything she gets its not just going to handed to her !!! Thanks for your opinion and we wish you all the best

As a high school cheer coach and a former all star coach this hurts my heart!! Currently have a varsity squad which includes 2 special education girls who are our "spirit leaders". Hope she gets her wish!!

I am so sad that this school is so closed minded to the beauty of downs syndrome. Open your eyes.

People with special needs deserve the same opportunities as all students - aren't we evolved enough by now to understand this! This teaches children that if you are different you can not do the same thing this is absurd!!!! I am from Canada and coach a special needs cheerleading team of 25 kids of all different disabilities and abilities and it brings joy to them every practice as any other cheerleader that I coach. I've coached this team for 9 years and cheerleading is a sport that is for everyone! These athletes are no different than any other athletes I've coached and beyond capable. This is actually so heartbreaking and unevolved that a school would allow this.

If she is qualified, let her cheer. It would be good for her
