I am a parent and a 16 year, middle and high school Special Education Specialist, Teacher and Coach. Federal mandates ( FAPE, IDEA) require this student permission to tryout for cheerleading, as her non-IEP peers. She has much to offer...the world, not just your school and Administration.

Cheering is Maddie's passion, she is an absolutely remarkable girl with exceptional talents who deserves a chance to be part of the team. Giving her the opportunity is the right thing to do. Maddie brings her special gift of light to everyone she meets, do not exclude this brilliant young girl! Go Maddie, we’re all cheering for you!!!

My daughter Lexi is 17 and has Down Syndrome. She has cheered for pro spirit for 6 years. They won the national championship two weeks ago at NCA's. She now has that coveted jacket! In middle school the cheer sponser and staff wanted Lexi to cheer, but the district would not allow it. This past year Lexi cheered with her high school varsity squad. Everyone embraced her and another young lady with down syndrome. She didn't try out. They made it an extension of their best buddies program. She cheered 3 regular season football games and two play off games. She cheered the second and fourth quarters only. She performed in 2 pep rallys and a couple of basketball games. Her coach is precious. The squad and their parents have also embraced my girl. It was a fabulous experience for everyone.

I am personally a high school cheerleading coach. For the past four years, we have allowed a specials needs child to tryout and automatically make the team. It not only helps the special needs girls develop their social and motor skills, it helps the other girls learn compassion and how to teach/lead.
