My high school (Burleson Centennial) stated a program called the sparkly effect this year. The program lets students that were in the special ed program cheer the first quarter of every home football and basketball game. It was a separate team that had leaders from the regular cheer team that helped teach and lead the special needs cheerleaders. As a graduated stundent I enjoyed coming home from college to watch the sparkle squad perform during the games and at the pep rallies. This program has become a big deal to our school and all the students support the sparkle squad. In my opinion the student section cheers along with the sparkle squad more than the regular cheer team! I think this program would be a great way to get Maddie and other special need students involved in the school! I hope that something is done so that she can reach her dreams! Good luck Maddie! I cheered in high school and I feel that any child should be given the chance to cheer along side others their age. People should love and want to help children be happy and healthy not put them down. I hope this helps :)

Let Maddie cheer!!! GISD you have the opportunity to change lives, right now, right here, do the right thing and let Maddie be a part of something way bigger then you realize. Then she will be the one changing lives, Go Maddie!!

A public school, particularly one that receives government dollars, cannot discriminate against a student based on disability status. Furthermore, a video or handout can easily be argued to be a 'reasonable accommodation', and less easily argued to be an unreasonable accommodation (and the onus is on the school to prove the latter). Best of luck :)

Maddie is no different than the other cheerleaders and should be able to be a part of the team! After all she probably has more spirt and love for the sport than any of the other girls! I hope everything goes well❤️

What harm comes to the team if she cheers? What harm comes to her if she does not cheer? Traditionally Cheerleading as a sport has been one of the most inclusive sports for kids with special needs. Except for your squad. Why? #lethercheer

She deserves to be treated like any other human being in that school district. They should let her cheer no matter what!
