I am a 34 yr old parent of 3 children and i am non binary. But i would like to talk to you about the future that you are setting up for your son. My ex husband is ftm, and so is my fiance now. The difference between the two is that my ex was not taken seriously and his parents where either neglectful or abusive due to his gender identity, while my fiance's mother was and is supportive. My ex has battlled drugs, alcohol and was highly abusive towards me and my children. He finds it hard to relate to people, and can't hold a job. He fights an internal battle with the left over voices in his head put their by his violent father and cold mother... However, my fiance is in management at a bakery, and helps me with our small business. He is loving and gentle, empathetic and caring. I emplore you as a parent to step up to the plate and be the support your child needs. We have enough hate in this world and if you don't show him how to love, he will fall for abusers... Or worse, become one. Please consider my story. Please research and reach out to the pflagg branch in your area. This may all be very hard to understand, but the effort we put into our children does pay off. They become happier, healthier people. And that all begins at home.

I don't believe gender is entirely a social construct, it's probably more to do with how the brain develops before birth. Trans people and Enbies are real!

I know it's a very scary place to imagine your son living in, but you have the power to make it so much easier for him. It's hard to know where to start but you can research and he can tell you what the process of HRT is like and what you can do to support him. Love and peace to your family.

I am also FTM, and I'm so proud of you for standing your ground on who you are. To the parent(s) involved - Please understand that being trans is not easy at all. It's far too much to go through just for attention, especially when most of the attention received is extremely hurtful. I, for one, would not have chosen this. If I had been able to choose, I would have just been born male. Please think back to your own childhood. When you were young, how did you know which hand was your dominant hand? How did you know what foods you liked or disliked? You knew because it just felt right. The things that didn't fit you felt wrong. Age does not invalidate those fundamental truths that make up who we are. I've known since I was old enough to tell my parents "I'm not a tomboy, I'm just a boy!" Damon, I wish you all the best. Keep being you ❤

You go, Damon. I'm transgender too and non-binary. You do you, and know that there are always people who love and support you!

Dear Damon's family - love means accepting a person just as they are. Accepting means showing through your actions that you are there to support them, not just spouting words. Supporting means showing respect by using the names/pronouns requested, asking respectful questions if you don't understand something, and educating yourself. You love your child. You accept your child. Now show him that you support him, too. We do!

Trans isn't a trend. More visibility can make it seem like it's becoming more and more common, but that's because people feel safer to come out. Your son felt safe enough to come out to you and for that you should feel proud, now he needs your support to get through his transition.

Stay strong Damon! I came out as demiboy when I was 15, I'm 17 now and I figure my family is exactly like yours: accepting but is ignorant/doesn't act. You're not alone in this struggle my dude, keep being yourself and show your family that they're wrong!
