Another money saving exercise? Sack members of staff who are because of their years of service are on an adequate pay and employ new staff to work appauling rosters for a pittance. I worked under the same complex as Eddy Daley for several years and he was an exemplary Paramedic with a fabulous attitude. Shame on the London Ambulance Service.

Eloquently put, Matt. I have wondered about this often myself but have come to the conclusion that a LOT is played on our sense of duty and caring attitude. If we were to play things by the book the service would collapse tomorrow!

Being ex ambulance staff, I fully sympathize with my colleague, who was recently sacked.The HCPC should be backing him.Not very professional of them at all.

If this paramedic was indeed too tired to continue with the shift he would not be able to give his best to the patient. Surely he has done the right thing by not placing the patient at risk of poor decision making from a fatigued clinician? I do not have the full facts of the case however from what has been reported it stay give grounds for a review of the desicion.

Refusing to attend a call after 11 hours with no break is NOT acting in the best interests of service users? Really? How did they not see a problem with that? Something needs done about this. Enough ambulance staff are walking out without sacking paramedics for poor management decisions. How rest periods have allowed to be neglected for so long, I just don't know. Whoever is doing PR for the ambulance services is "damaging the public's confidence in the profession". And nothing's being done about that.

As my dad is a paramedic, seeing him come through the door Christmas eve having not stopped and his last job being a cot death it was just heart breaking and knowing he had to go to work again that night and do it all again i think it is about time that the welfare of those on the service is looked at by those who make the decisions. I wish Ed all the best.

Mr Day, for those who don't know him, is the most professional of paramedics, caring, considerate and skilled. The Trust have just lost one of the best for being sensible.

I left the profession because of total exhaustion and frustration caused by a system which not only fails to support but actively abuses it's dedicated workforce. My understanding of dynamic risk assessment means everyone is obliged to declare a risk which is all this man appears to have done.

The HCPC should review this decision immediately and give some serious consideration to the unrealistic boundaries within which were are expected to practice. 11 hours plus without a break contravenes every working time legislation, surely! The HCPC should also recognise that fatigue in itself surely constitutes an impairment of fitness to practice. This Paramedic recognised that, and should be commended not vilified for his actions.

This is just the first of many, I suspect. A symptom of an underlying issue that is years in the making and starting to show. We are no longer at breaking point, but through it. HCPC - there to protect the public, yet in doing this clearly failing in such by not recognising the dangers facing them as a result of overworked staff. This Paramedic must be reinstated and the real issue looked into. Most of us are thinking of leaving for the very reason this incident occurred.

I fell asleep at the wheel for an instance at the end of my night shift lucky it was Sunday morning and the motorway was quiet. I now insist on driving first and attending second. there is not enough support for the staff, when we make a mistake we are asked questions however when yet another member of our public phones for an ambulance that is not needed no one follows them up with questions and some life advice.
