Hawaii Cheerleading Judging Questionable

I'm a Waianae cheerleader. Everyone did great but our scores were lower than pre comp and we didn't even do much at pre comp yet the scores were higher. I'm not one to complain but this is the first year out of my entire cheer season that this has been a problem personally to me. I hope we can make this change. Good luck with the petition :)

Campbell High School got robbed. They had a great clean routine and ended up getting 7/8 place yesterday. I feel that they and Kapolei should’ve easily been in the top 3. The judges are judging off of favoritism and not skill or talent. Fix the judges.

I’ve cheered for two different schools and this judging favoritism has happened to me twice with two different teams, Campbell and Kapolei deserved higher placings than what they were given, the results of this past competition was so bs and all based on favoritism. This really need to stop.

Intergrity of this sport is at stake. Judges need to judge by what they see not who they know. Keep your head up Kapolei. You guys are beast and a force to be reckoned with.

The Judging was unfair as well as the scoring. A lot of schools were robbed of their correct placement in this years Western Cheer Competition. What breaks my heart the most is a lot of the cheerleaders are in their senior year so it’s not like they can go back to this day. They bust their asses off day in and day out, coming home with injuries and pain just to to be scored so low. I mean come on now there were so many people at the competition that we’re all stunned at the outcome. Where was the judges after the competition why is it every time there is no one there to explain the scoring?? This needs to stop and OIA or whoever is in charge of this needs to be alerted about what went down at this years WCC.

Something needs to be changed. Campbell & Kapolei cheerleading programs were not judged fairly.

If the judging is not professional or educated enough to fairly and competently judge a competition, then there really is no sport. If a referee for any sport, clearly did not know how to referee a game the referee would be fired because it then just becomes a pickup game in the neighborhood where anything goes and it no longer is a competition. It seems these judges have made Westerns a joke, a pickup game of cheer where anything goes. The girls work too hard for that. They practice every day, 3-4 hours a day, they miss time with friends and they are away from family. It’s not just the girls, but the enitire Family that has to make the sacrifices. They do it for the love of the sport, not for a “pick-up” game of cheer. Changes need to be made!

There were routines that should have been greater than others. There was one school with only 2 running tumblers and that's was it and they placed. Yet other schools had majority. Most schools hit everything in their routine. It flowed. Also their routines had so much energy that those schools should not have been on bottom. Apparently there is a "vibe" that feel like the judges always would down grade other schools just so other schools can proceed. It's not fair. There was school that hit 8-10 but the deserved a 6-7 all the way through the scoring it made no sense. Its was so unusual that these schools great routines were placed so low.

I've coached many levels of cheer including high school JV and Varsity for 20 years. Competitive cheer became a sport in Hawai'i in 2001 starting with individual league competitions. In 2002, the first state championship was held. Back then and for the first 5 years everything was purely based on judges opinion. Every skill had a score that could be reached but the judge could score you whatever they wanted. It definitely was all about WHO YOU ARE, WHERE YOU COME FROM, etc and teams with higher skills would get robbed just because they're from a certain school. The first target point system and the new one there is today was created to "bring fairness" to the judging. Skills are ranked at certain targets and judges had to stay within that target range. So the problem with the 2018 West Championship was how was a squad that listed all their targets as 10s, got it approved in warm ups by the head judge as 10s, hit all their skills although of course they can be cleaner and sharper, had 0 deductions, higher targets than 3 teams they lost to, but were scored 7s and 8s? They scored 47 points higher in preseaon than their West score with a slightly simpler routine as well. Something is obviously not right. The West comp was judged like clean and sharp was worth 30 points each. I bet people who had targets of 7 scored 10s. All I know is things need to change. 17 years of ripping kids off and damaging their respect and heart for this sport is enough!! The ones who are fair or at least tries to be but other judges won't comply, thank you. For the ones who rob kids each year that cheered ages ago and don't have respect for the difficulty of skill that cheer now includes in this day and age, please step away. Enough is enough. Even the crowd agreed the scoring was way off! Congrats to all for doing your best but if you know you were placed high and someone else had higher skills than you but you walk away like eh it's all good, your true colors surely shined. It is very sad to see unfair judging during the competition season year after year. It breaks my heart to see my daughter experience this unfairness with two completely different teams in different schools. This needs to stop!
