The so-called reform plans reflect a move away from the more than a century-old commitment to public education. It is tied to a project that aims to smash teachers' unions, open up the school system to private corporate investors, and subvert what once was a key pillar of democratic social life. It is no accident that all of this is tied to the decades-long reductions of public funding for schools in places like Newark. Weequahic and the schools of our beloved home town need massive infusion of public resources, funded by increasing taxes on the wealthy, and buttressed by new investments in housing and job creation.

While I have respect for those who are looking out for the best interests of Newark's children, I think they have overlooked the significance of Weequahic's supporting alma mater, it's tradition and rich history of great educators, educational and athletic achievements, and accomplishments of its graduates. To disregard the significance of Weequahic to Newark and beyond, and to relegate that inspirational reputation to obsolescence is a tragic mistake. It presents a strong foundation upon which to build an even better life for Newark's children.

A new principal should signal a new effort that should involve parents, students, faculty, and the entire community in decision-making about Weequahic's future. Leaving decisions solely in the hands of the burocrats in hardly a democratic process.
