The Board of Directors for Yavapai College ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]) made the decision to cut our shop in half to give the space to a police academy. This decision came as a surprise to the students and faculty because plans had already been made to move the shop into another building with more space as part of the school’s long-term plan. There is no way our woodshop can function properly with half the space and it would cut enrollment in half minimally or destroy it altogether. The woodworking program is not only important for the art we create-it is also responsible for teaching valuable skills that we can use to create our own businesses or apply at home and in the workforce. Cutting the shop in half is not feasible if we are to continue this incredible program.

We the undersigned request that Yavapai College maintain the current woodshop location and square footage or increase the square footage if the shop needs to move.

The volume of support has secured us a formal meeting with the administrative board to discuss the facility reallocation plans. I am currently drafting a letter that outlines the specific operational requirements of the woodshop to ensure they reflect our needs during that discussion.

DO NOT cut the size of the woodworking shop! As taxpayers, we have observed the facility needs expansion, not reduction. We have watched several of our neighbors develop into woodworking artists as a result of this facility, its instructors and students. Don't "chop" the shop. There must be other public buildings better suited to handle a police academy.
Please don't ruin our shop! I'm learning how to build and create so I can start my own business. The facilities and staff are invaluable!
We NEED a space for lectures, and we need space to maneuver our projects! Please understand, the hassle it would be for anyone moving into the already occupied space and moving our program equipment out is removing the possibilities of YOUR students! We are there for the wood shop, space, and excellent teachers and assistants. Energy toward anything is valuable and taking anything from this program would be undermining ALL OF US, decision makers included, and would regrettably damage Yavapai Community College LONG TERM. We have a very good safety track record, and that could change and create huge damage for YCC. We are stepping up in the arts community, and without ample space it is impossible for us to continue to do that. Offices are much easier to create than a safety conscious wood shop and work space. In the end, the wrong choice would have a major detrimental effect on everyone and may cost the school a price in (re)enrollment numbers, a price in safety and a price of trust and confidence which will really add up to a negative effect.
We need MORE programs like this! STEM is great, but we need good hands on education as well. Not everyone wants to be a chevalier engineer, and we need things built.
Trades such as woodworking are so valuable, as they are lifetime long skills that can grow into lucrative careers and hobbies. Please keep your program where it is at and do not cut the space in half. There is no way you could have the program succeed in a small space! Thank you
This move seems to intend to dismantle this program. It is absolutely a much needed community resource. It's too easy to build other offices elsewhere, the costs needed to refit the shop and make it into offices far outweigh building new ones elsewhere. In no way does this move make any sense whatsoever. Please do not remove this critical resource from those of us learning trade skills.
Working or creating things with ones hands is very important to body and soul. We, as a people, have lost so much to the "digital age" we cannot afford to lose the art of Woodworking!!

Combining the classroom lectures with the wood shop and giving the classroom to the police academy is the worst possible decision for both parties. The noise from the equipment will make lecture and safety instruction impossible which could result in safety issues for the students. Unless extraordinary measure are taken the noise from the wood working equipment would make working in the classroom part of the building impossible for the police academy, neither party will have a satisfactory working environment. Find another solution.
