The Hackney Empire has been a key cultural icon in London for over a hundred years. It is closing its main stage for around 9 months in January as part of a restucture to turn around its financial prospects. We recognise the assistance to date given to the theatre by the London Borough of Hackney and also by the Arts Council and welcome their continued support. We call on all those involved to work together to ensure that the theatre reopens in 2010 as a successful and viable venue that continues to serve the people of Hackney and London as a whole.
