Gunn Parents for keeping Weighted GPA

pls keep the w-gpa at gunn for current seniors.

unweighted GPA indeed causes more stress and competition to Palo Alto students due to unfairness and disadvantage when competing with other students from US and other countries during the college admission process.

Strongly support to keep wGPA at Gunn and request PALY to align with Gunn.

Strongly support reporting weighted GPA on students' transcript for their hard work. Taking AP classes itself should not be stressful. Some AP teachers simply don't teach and that creates more stress on students. College or graduate school teachers DO teach. I urgent the Superintendent and School board to Please focus on hiring more qualified AP teachers to reduce stress for students. Thank you.

Dear school board, I urged you not to take weighted GPA calculation away from transcript. We need to provide both unweighted and weighted GPA on the transcript. Most high schools do it and what makes us an exception? The GPA is the result after the course completion, not at the course selection. I understand school board would like to lessen the stress of the school learning for our kids, but 'hiding' weighted GPA is not the way to do it. When kids put in the efforts on harder courses, we want to let them feel self-accomplished by giving them points! Our kids deserve it. When our kids first learnt how to pick up the spoon, learnt how to walk or learnt how to write, don't we as parents or teachers always gave them the biggest applause/hug? How about now, when kids finished a challenged course, we want to 'hide' the weighted GPA for them? This is ridiculous! As parents or educators, we need to support our kids from all the 'different' angles. Have you taken the polls from students what they want, what makes them happier at school? Please keep wGPA for my son and his friends at GUNN.

PAUSD should report wGPA as long as colleges accept wGPA in order to give students the most opportunities -- it is clear that many colleges rely on what the high school reports rather than calculating themselves.

Please keep the weighted GPA at Gunn. Why shouldn't our students receive recognition for challenging themselves in AP and honors classes? It is my responsibility as a parent to ensure my child is not suffering undue stress from their academic workload. It should not be legislated by PAUSD, even with the best of intentions.

I support the weighted GPA on the Transcript.

Our family strongly supports having WGPA on the transcript. It is needed for merit scholarships and entry into Honors programs at out of state schools. If our students have taken the same classes as students elsewhere, they should be equally entitled to entry into the same programs.

Independently of the fact that removing w-GPA may be a bad idea, there is an important consideration of fairness: Any change of the rules may not be done in the middle of the game. Our students made critical decisions about selecting their classes based on the existence of w-GPA. They took difficult classes being in particular motivated by w-GPA. Removal of w-GPA in the middle of the school year will frustrate and demoralize many of them as well as reduce their career opportunities. Why are we doing this now??? If w-GPA must be removed, it could be removed for the new students entering the school but not for the students that currently study. Please, understand this is a very unfair decision that will bring a lot of disappointment and frustration to many student and their parents!!!

It is unfair to Gunn students who decide to challenge themselves in higher difficulty classes. Rather than removing the option from Gunn students, I think it would be more beneficial to include the option for Paly students. Gunn students are not forced to take higher level classes and they should be rewarded for their attitude and will to challenge themselves rather than penalized, and in my opinion, removing the option of weighted GPA's discourages students from trying.

I, as a Gunn parent, would strongly support keeping weighted GPA to maintain a more fair environment for all students. While removal of weighted GPA may sound like reducing the stress, it will turned out to have the effect opposite to the initial intention, as mentioned in this petition. It's important to boost education quality in a right way, not manipulate policies to keep everyone look even, no matter how they perform.

Instead of removing or limiting wGPA at Gunn, Paly should add it. Most Paly parents think wGPA is reported to colleges when, in fact, it isn't. They have been deceived.
