Granada Hills Charter High School: Anti-Dress Code

I went to Granada for two years.. The dress code was such a stress on me, and now were finally making a change!!

Wish they had fixed this problem before I went to GHCHS, but I'm glad they finally addressing it!

This dress code is unfair, especially to those with long arms. I have never seen a dress that is finger tip plus one inch on me if it wasn't below the knee. On other girls, finger to plus one inch can be as high as just below their crotch. It's an arbitrary marker and it's unfair. Sometimes I'd wear dresses that were "too short" but if I carried books all day, no one even stopped to check me BECAUSE MY DRESSES AREN'T TOO SHORT

I definitely agree. During my senior year, just a week before graduation I received a dress code violation for having my shoulder visible with my slightly off the shoulder top. If dress code is going to be applied to everyone they should do so fairly and free from sexism. It's not fair to women.

I went to school here 6 years ago! I can only imagine that the dress code became stricter once I left. I was always the bigger girl in school so hot weather was NOT my friend. Granada, the kids aren't asking for much to be honest, they just want to be who they are and wear what they think expresses their personalities. If that means they come to school in a bikini or a bunny suit , it shouldn't be looked down upon, because you are setting your students, much like me now, to not feel as comfortable in their own body down the road... and I am in my 20's. Just a concept to think about.

I remember having to figure out a way to walk to class without having a dresscoder approach me, I feared getting dress coded everyday (even when my outfit was completely appropriate). I believe I accumulated over 100 detention hours due to dresscode throughout my 4 years for things like yoga pants, or a sweater falling slightly off my shoulder. This also prohibited me from going to events such as school dances or senior day. Changes need to be made!

As an alumni ('11) I can say that in retrospect, Granada's dress code was so incredibly sexist and problematic. Girls are disproportionately targeted. These types of dress codes essentially teach women that their bodies will inevitably be viewed in line with the male gaze and the only way to combat that is to cover up, feeding into victim blaming and rape culture. As a graduated senior this dress code was horrible, especially in the scorching hot summer days. This is the valley what do you expect? Let's be real. No more illogical dress code rules, lets reach a reasonable consensus. I definitely support what this young woman is doing and I hope our voice is heard.

The Dress code at GHCHS is completely draconian and unnecessary. You can’t be a campus that boasts such prestige and academic excellence and systematically shame your young female students into compliance. Campus authority vigilantly seeks out mild offenders of their dress code policy and punishes them incredibly harshly; women are given old PE uniforms to wear for the rest of the day as an effort to shame them amongst their peers. Granada is one of the few institutions where young women can miss an entire class period because of a bra strap that was showing or for wearing leggings yet also a large majority of your students are incredibly engaged in their academia and taking heavy course loads, many of which multiple absences and tardies would adversely affect. These young women you are punishing will soon become members of a thriving society of which your dress- code does not apply. Teach your school staff to stop sexualizing these young girls and focus on your ACTUAL JOB as a school which is to educate the youth.

The way the dress code is laid out makes it seem like all guys are sex fiends! I'm a guy, so I'm offended! If it has to do with the whole "distraction" thing, IT'S MORE DISTRACTING WHEN YOU TAR AND FEATHER US!!!! Plus, I get distracted all the time! Not because of clothes, but because of lights and sounds. As an observer, it's only natural that I'd be easily distracted in general! The dress code is just Granada's way of saying "If you act like a human, you will be expelled."

Graduated in 2012, and out of the 4 years I never once tardy and the only detention I received was for a hole in my ripped jeans. According to the staff, the home was "far too high on my leg" and it was "leaving the rest for imagination". I have so much respect avnd gratitude for this school but I couldn't believe the 2 hour detention I was given. Why should girls have to dress around boys' imagination.

Finally! As a former graduate im glad someone finally did something to try and change this ridiculous dress code!

I agree the dress code will have to change but allowed to wear straps and dresses whatever the girls want. Me

School is prided on individuality, therefore students should be able to dress as they please and express themselves freely.
