Granada Hills Charter High School: Anti-Dress Code

Hi, I am currently a Mork scholar (Full tuition plus a 5000 stipend) at the University of Southern California and I graduated from Granada Hills Charter High School in the year 2014. Now I can write a full paper on why the dress code is inherently sexist and anti-feminist, but I won't. Instead I will simply say this, in college and in the real world no one is ever going to say anything about how you dress unless you work in a corporation or business. So why is it implemented in high school? Should girls even have the idea of being objectified at such a young age? And if parents are responsible, they will teach their kids how to dress. It is just another rule, another mode for punishment and regulation and another possible method for rebellion. Rethink it, rewrite it, and reimagine the dress code to adapt into the real world.

Granada's dress code was always number 1 ridiculous thing about that school. The fact that they have administrators just looking around, hoping to find a girl out of dress code, is unbelievable. They would always give detention like candies. Happy that students and others are finally taking a stand.

I think it's ridiculous how there are administrators that go around specifically looking for dress coded students. The dress code is too heavily enforced and it's too big of a deal at this school. It desperately needs to be changed so that students can have more freedom, of course within reason. But students should be allowed to wear tank tops, dresses, skirts, pants, and shorts as long as it's not too revealing.

I hope the dress code will be amended to get rid of the rules that are inherently dependent upon the nonsensical fetishization and over-sexualization of the female body.

I am a GHCHS alumna and feel very strongly about this issue. The dress code at Granada is incredibly sexist and sends a clear message that the administration considers its female students as sexual objects. When I was at GHCHS, I was given detention for dress code multiple times - once, the teacher claimed that my leggings were "too sheer" and the dean forced me to walk back and forth in different lighting to see if my legs were visible. It is absolutely shameful the way the administration targets women as a source of "distraction" for male students and faculty. Taking women out of class because they are "distracting" male students is contrary to GHCHS's emphasis on keeping students in class AND reinforces the message that other people's comfort and education can come at the expense of women's education. Enough is enough. I am so proud that students are finally speaking out - stay strong, guys.
