I don't understand why I cant wear leggings and shorts. We live in california do you really want me to wear jeans in 100 degree weather! and its not fair that "boys getting distracted" is what dictates what the girls can wear.

I believe that girls should be able to wear shorts that are shorter than your fingertips plus an inch because I like to wear shorts. I do not own shorts that are longer than my fingertips. It is not fair that boys have more freedom with dress code than girls when according to administration the boys are the original problem. Apparently the boys are the ones getting distracted so why are all the girls being punished?

The dress code is ridiculous. I am a male and female attire is irrelevant to me. I go to school to learn, not to look at girls' attire.

I hate the dresscode. Im sorry. It is so hard in the summer for me and other girls to wear shorts or dresses because of the finger tips, + an inch. :((

Yes of course, had not known that sort of thing. And I mean yea...don't know that many people....not so popular..more small group of people type of person..so I wouldn't know more info about such things....keep to myself in classes....have no friends in most of them..so I mean yea...

Dress codes and their likeness, although seemingly practical and harmless, have been frequently used to reinforce the idea that women's bodies are sexual objects, labeling them as "distracting." Distracting to whom? To other students? As a student at Cleveland High School, a school with little to no actual dress code other than hats, I can inform you that seeing a shoulder, a thigh, or a bra strap does not, as some would choose to believe, create a hostile environment for learning. Stop sexualizing young girls and start educating.

@ Margaret If you read the entire petition, you would clearly see that I am not asking for the entire dress code to be removed. Logic does play a factor in this and I am not going to ask Granada to remove a dress code in its entirety when some of it does make sense. For example, the rule about no gang related attire I completely understand as well as the rule regarding dangerous jewelry. It is simply for the student's safety. However, when a student is being pulled out of valuable class time to be issued detention because a bra strap, leggings, hole, shirt, skirt, dress whatever is "distracting", that is where the true problem lies. The fact that all of us girls have different heights as well as arm lengths makes the fingertip length plus an inch rule extremely unfair. What is acceptable by one student is not 'dress code appropriate if worn by another of different stature. Overall, I understand that there still does need to be some sort of guideline because without it, some students will unfortunately begin to abuse of the lack of regulation and who knows where it will all lead. The hood/hat rule can be adjusted but it will be a much harder fight as there are several aspects of safety that one must take into consideration but definitely something we hope to slightly change as well. I truly appreciate your signature as well as opinions and time. :)

As great as this it, it's just not practical. Yes, I do attend Granada and I hate their dress code, but it's for a good reason. Boys shouldn't be catered to because a girl's body is distracting, but young girls need to be more modest. If there are 14, 15, and 16 year olds parading around in skimpy clothing, you're only asking for trouble, not to mention setting a terrible example for younger kids. I would like to see certain aspects of the dress code changed, such as the +1 inch be removed, but things like no hoods should remain in place as it could be a potential safety hazard, especially in a large campus. If it's cold out then the idea should be revisited, but hats and hoods can potentially conceal an identity of someone, and with all the violence flying around in the media right now, it would be incredibly detrimental to the students' safety.

Of course but from what some ASB members have told me, they've been trying proposals where administration makes it seem like they are going to change but never follow through which is why I didn't want to go directly to admin. just yet. I have already contacted Daily News and they might cover our story. These different tactics we are using could really make a change but reverting to old ways may not exactly be as effective. I'm definitely willing to try though. Thanks again :)
