Yes we should recognize how hard exceptional students work, but it shouldn’t be a huge part of high school graduation. I think the school should make a separate event to recognize how hard these students have worked throughout their high school career. I think graduation should be focused on all the students as a whole and and not picking them apart. If the order went by GPA, kids who didn’t do as well would feel embarrassed or left out. This could lead to students dreading graduation for fear of being humiliated in front of their peers and family for the few c’s they got in their math class.

I have worked tirelessly throughout my four years in high school and I want to be recognized for my efforts. I sustained a severe concussion and whiplash the first week of freshman year, and I still suffer from migraines and other side effects to this day (as a senior). I have a 5.0 GPA despite everything I have had to overcome, and I want to be recognized as Summa Cum Laude.

As a proud graduate of Gulf Coast High School, I am disgusted that this has even become an issue. Every single respectable academic institution in the entire country recognizes the hard work of their students. If we begin to discredit the achievements of our students then what even is the point of achieving? I am appalled with the decision of the Gulf Coast High administration to undermine such an important tradition and hope and pray that this decision is reversed.
