On June 17th, 2022, Penn State announced a Graduate Student Stipend increase of 3% for the 2022-2023 academic year. However, the inflation rate is at 8% and therefore, graduate students feel strongly that the graduate student stipend should increase by at least 8% for the 2022-2023 academic year, to ensure that the spending power of our stipend does not decrease. The administration has taken notice of this surge in support and our team is now coordinating a formal meeting with the graduate school leadership. We are currently finalizing a briefing document that outlines the discrepancy between current stipends and local inflation rates to present during these upcoming negotiations.

Hershey is an expensive town, both rent and gas prices are inflating quickly, and our stipend is not adjusting accordingly.
Graduate students work well beyond the hours in our contracts and are the backbone of most research labs. The University needs to support its students in these terrible economic times.
The inflation has significantly impact many aspects of my life and I barely have enough money to live every month. If the stipend does not increase enough to compensate for the inflation, some policies should change to allow grad students to work 2nd job to make ends meet.
A 3% increase in stipend and an 8% increase in inflation means that we are still 5% poorer than we were before, and we were already pretty poor.
The Board of Trustees cannot expect students to tackle the tsunami-like hike in inflation with an umbrella. Additionally, it's worth noting that the health insurance rates will increase too, so overall, the increase in stipend is insignificant.
Living wages for everyone please.
3% is embarassing and insulting to the backbone of their research. It fails to even keep up with inflation.

A 3% increase in stipend is insulting to graduate students already struggling to make ends meet. The stipend is a big factor when choosing which program to join and showing such a small change in the stipend suggests that Penn State does not care about its current students and will make it more difficult to recruit.
