As the students effected by the huge oversubscription of Goldsmiths Halls of Residence, as well as our educational peers and parents/guardians, we demand an official apology from the institution of Goldsmiths for the added stress and inconvenience due to the vast incompetence of the Accommodation Office of Goldsmiths. We expect the apology to be issued from Accommodation Services Manager, Ms. Sue Tarhan, on behalf of the university, and be delivered in writing to all undergraduates who applied for Goldsmiths Halls of Residence for the 2013/14 academic year, but were rejected due to oversubscription, or who were accepted into the overpriced, newly-obtained Student Castle or Mansion Wharf, and who now face a monetary struggle because of the high cost of rent in the aforementioned residencies.
Furthermore, we demand further significant subsidies towards the currently astronomical rent of Student Castle and Mansion Wharf, allowing students from less fiscally prosperous households to consider both residencies as a realistic option for accommodation. Currently, rent on certain rooms available at Student Castle and Mansion Wharf is larger than the sum available to the majority of students' loans. We wish this to rectified for the upcoming academic year.
We also suggest to Goldsmiths that they acquire new, Goldsmiths owned Halls of Residence within the foreseeable future. The oversubscription of their Halls of Residence occurs yearly, without any action being taken by the university. A significant amount of financial backing should be made available to secure new property for their students within the next few years.
I've known a guy who lives in Greenwich who got a place right away! He spent most his time at home and lived a few minutes away. Every year I've had to travel nearly 2 hours each way for most of the first term. Even during assignments. It's really impacted my ability to study as I'm always tired and get back late. Can't attend every recital I wanted to. Maybe take less students if you don't have the space for them in halls. And rethink the system you use to allocate. I live 20 mins from High Barnet and yet I've seen people from Camden and Greenwich getting a place right away. I regret my decision to study at this place. And lack of hall space is a major part of that.
