As a Greek female, myself nor my sister were named after any of our grandparents. There are many times that I wish I were, to have that connection to them as 3 of the 4 have passed. My mother being a public school teacher was also worried about pronunciations. As I am not married yet, I do plan on bring back the tradition of name my future children after their grandparents. Traditions are very important to Greeks, as I am sure Belarussians as well.

I was named after my paternal grandfather, keeping with Italian tradition. I think its a great custom to follow. Unique name and I see no problem with it. All of his buddies will call him Spyros anyway so its not hard to pronounce. Good luck!

my son is named Spyridon, we call him Spyros, and we have NO issues at school, or with his friends. We are from the island of Corfu. You shout Spyros, almost half of the people turn around. Good luck!

I like that you have told her you can name the other children anything you want, but that the first born son's name matters so much to you. For that comment alone, I truly do believe the first born son should be named after your father - Spyridon. Then any other children can be named Michael, or whatever else your wife likes. I am EXTREMELY against some of the outrageous names people are coming up with - many I think given by too young (and often teen) parents - like Nutella, Fish, Kitty, Moon, Etsy (after the website), Pixie, Posey, Stormie, Dragon, and Tiger. I believe courts NEED to start declining some of the names parents are choosing like many countries do. However, Spyridon may be odd here in America, but it's a REAL and traditional name. Because he will have Greek in his background, once people know that, I think the name will be highly appreciated and not seen as just another outrageous name given in these "new times" but something given following tradition. I VOTE SPYRIDON FOR THE FIRST BORN SON AND THE REST OF THE CHILDREN'S NAMES CAN BE MICHAEL OR WHATEVER OTHER NAME YOUR WIFE LOVES!

Spyridon! Because I wasn't "allowed" to name my baby after a cartoon character. And your kid could have a badass name!
