I think naming the child after his grandfather is wonderful. It is a piece of his heritage. I feel certain, after a while, the mother will realize this and will get used to the name. They can always give him a nickname.

You should choose whatever fits the baby's personality when it's born. Using both names would be a good compromise. I just think that yes, it is an ethnic name, but there are so many children to this day with ethnic names, especially in American families of Middle Eastern descent. Be proud of the Greek heritage. It may be difficult for him as a child but he will learn to love and appreciate it as he gets older. Don't abandon tradition just to fit in to this country and this age... Here's to hoping it's a girl! haha. And of course that the baby is healthy! Best of luck! & stop arguing with each other, practice being the loving couple that your child will look up to... there is no need for anger or resentment over a name. Thanks!

Can't say I think it's a God given right but it ceratinly is a strong tradition in many cultures so I have to agree with the Dad here.

I agree on keeping with tradition, as a born and raised "Ellinida". However, I also believe you should keep up with the times. Spyridon is an old name and frankly I have never come upon it before. I would make Spyridon the boys MIDDLE name - pick a name both you and your wife agree upon for the first name. And all that "talk" about the Koumbaro.. seriously sounds pretentious to me. Congratulations to you both for the upcoming birth of your first child.

It's a cool name, and not boring like most anglo names. And the fact that you have the ethnicity to support such a name makes it even more authentic and reasonable as a choice.

I wasn' planning on signing this because i agreed with your wife about it being too weird, but after reading the article in yahoo news I changed my mind...you're right...every third or fourth guy is named Michael (nothing wrong with that, but come on...really?) I want to live in a world where there are more Spyridons and less Michaels lol....so Yes... I am for you naming your son spyridon...In spanish we have something similar...Espiridion...and many also think it is strange... #NameHimSpyridon

it isn't like he is making up a silly name like some hollywood star. It is a family name, thus respect the wish. Tradeoff is the girl name. It seems fair.
