In Italian and Greek culture, by showing repect, you should name your first born son/daughter after your husband's parents, so to show your respect for your husband and his father mother, you should name it after his father/mother. That is the problem with young people today, they do not stay with the traditions of the cultures.

I feel it should be a joint agreement between husband and wife. If either disagrees than they need to pick a name they can agree on.

to call spyridon 'archaic' is pretty baseless and kind of rude, considering the name was the father of her husband. i think its a great name, great sounding, much more unique than michael, which is a fine name on it's own right but, let's be honest, boring. i hope you get the amount of signers you need!

I don't think that the father is out of line at all. There are plenty of people that choose weird names for there children "North West" as an example and this is not a weird name. Spyridon is a strong name and one the boy could be proud of his whole life. I have a popular name and I had two or three other Matt's in every grade in school and it's not the end of the world but it also sucks.

If he can show that the first born in the last 5 generations have been named this way then he has a leg to stand on. If not he should let her name him

I don't think the name just a little difficult to pronounce and it's unique. I don't see anything wrong with the name and it honors the child's grandfather.

It is a beautiful thing to maintain traditional names and family history through the names of your children. Why not Spyridon with Michael for the middle name? Let this man have pride in his family's heritage. It is a beautiful name, and I don't see how the name of a SAINT is base or bereft of elegance.

Michael is neither unique nor particularly elegant. I think Spyridon is an amazing name! I would never let my child down by giving them the same name six other boys will have in every class and work place he encounters. Let him stand out and be something extraordinary like you know he will be. Great men have great names. Ordinary men you don't remember have names like Michael.

Michael is archaic. Its over 2000 years old because its in the Christian Bible. If everyone has agreed to use the wife's mother's name for a little girl, then it is only fair to let the father's father's name be for the little boy. Compromise is the biggest (and hardest) lesson in marriage. I am sure she speaks of equality all the time (as do a lot of women) and then never practices it.

I love this. My husband and I had a similar argument over our sons name, Ivan. I agreed to it hoping for all girls. Ivan was a traditional family name.

It seems when most immigrants come to America their culture is diluted, watered-down or completly forgotten. I love the idea of keeping the culture alive. Let him name his son.

I named my son after my father-in-law, even though my father-in-law did not want me to name my son Pavlos. He never liked his name. Kept the tradition and the family name going.
