Although I just heard of the name Spyridon for the first after reading this article, I find it very interesting and unique. It helps that you live in a Greek neighborhood where most will be able to pronounce the name, otherwise, when your son attends school the name might get butchered the way my uncommon name did when I was growing up.

He's agreed to let her name the child if it's a girl, to choose the middle name of a boy, and to name a second male child - all as she wishes. His ONLY request is to carry on a family tradition for his firstborn son - let it go lady, compromise!

As someone with an unusual family name (pronounced differently from how it looks, as it's Germanic), I have to say that in the end, I'm with Spyridon...I can't even tell you how many Michael's I've met...

I am all for tradition and passing down family names, especially unique names that are not as common. My first son was named after my husband's father. My second son was named after MY father. I might suggest Michael as his middle name if you aren't planning to have any other children..

If it means this much to your husband, I would encourage you to agree to perhaps name your child Spyridon Michael. You can always call him Michael. Traditions are important. (And, yes, Americans need to work harder at pronouncing non-Anglo names.) Best wishes for a safe delivery and healthy baby whatever you decide.

You have to follow the Greek tradition. Spyridon is a perfectly fine name and much easier to pronounce than your wife's first name. As a Greek you will crush your father's soul if you do not name the baby after him. My children all have traditional Greek names and have no problem with it. In this day most kids have some kind of strange name that their parents made up. My kids have no problem at school, they are just another kid with a unique name.

I feel that Michael is a very common name and could even be his middle name. She could always use a nickname. Today the unique names are more common then ever. The father should have more input on his 1st born sons name, especially if he's giving up his input for the middle name and next child(ren). Give the man a break!
