So, I understand the father's feelings on this, because my brother had this also happen to him. Only his wife didn't want to name my nephew after his daddy (my brother). I think it's one of the most loving things a woman can do for her husband, to allow him to name his son after himself or another family member. I feel like it really honors a man to do this, and shows the ultimate loving action - having faith in your husband and trusting that he's choosing a name for the child you both created, and knowing that name comes with a special meaning. Most men get to take part so little in the pregnancy, and women seem to forget that. I think the name mentioned in this petition is so unique, and really, quite cool! I too agree that the little guy would probably thank you both later. I saw the name and thought it was really unique. Some names are old school these days, but older names remind us that we came from somewhere, that we have roots that mean something to the people who brought us into this world. I realize this is a sensitive topic, but I hope that you can see that allowing a father to name his firstborn son is one of the most loving, honorable and respectful things, that you can do for your husband, and child. It will mean something special to both of them as he grows, and they'll have that extra something special to talk about through both of their lifetimes.

Spyridon is a beautiful name and it is ALSO more than completely acceptable in American culture as we are a nation made of a diverse peoples and cultures. GREAT NAME! Although Micheal is one of my most favorite names, you are right in that there are soooo many named Micheal. Why not keep a family name alive and its not a very rare one at that. Just in some circles but really now a days there are so many people trying to create special names out of anything that it seems stupid when we have wonderful names in many cultures that would actually be real and useful than using objects like "Apple" or flowers/plants "Blue Ivy" these are silly stupid names. This is a long standing established name AND its his grad father's name. I love it.

Why not name him Michael Spyridon Soukeras (Not Mischa!)and call him by his middle name? Or Spyridon Michael. I think Spyridon sounds like a neat and possibly unusual name, not hard to pronounce, and the man should be able to name his son. Why should the wife get to name her daughter Elena or son Michael after her parents (Elena being an old-fashioned name and Michael too common) and put her husband's traditions down? My name is difficult for some to pronounce, but they either figure it out, or I figure out that they are not worth my time. Grow up, Kseniya, and learn to give your husband a break every once in a while!

Good luck regardless of your baby's name. Though I have to say that citing Spiro Agnew, who resigned the VP office after pleading no contest to a charge stemming for accusations of accepting bribes is not really a point that bolsters your case.

I agree with the wife it is an unusual name and I think it is more important to the Dad to carry on the tradition. Just let his name be officially this but call him whatever you want. Many people who have family names go by something else in the country. I know an Orville III who goes by Rex.

My son name is Spiro and we live in California where there are not alot of Greeks. he is now 19 years old and everyone loves his name and so does he. I named my son Spiro after my father n law but I named my daughter after my side. Traditionas are great but we decided that he gets first male and they rest we worked out. When this tradition came about Greeks we having many kids. So I say she gets to name your next child and you have to get her a big gift. Good luck!
