The Italians had a very similar naming convension. I am in favor of using unique names that have a family history. If the child does not like it, he can always use his middle name.

Be glad you have a husband that is there...and a future father that values his family history...with all the freakin werid names in society today..I've raised my kid alone for 18yrs I'm going to do college w/out her father...maybe if I hadn't of wanted it all my own way all the time...maybe I wouldn't be doing it alone...let the man rule once in a while.

Great family name....Different is good in today's American society. Besides, it's better than some of the names some celebrity's have named their children, i.e. Pilot Inspektor

Compromise. Select a new first name and give him two middle names, after both of his grandfathers. That keeps everyone happy. One of my grandson's was given my maiden name as his middle name. Traditions are nice, but then so too is keeping peace within the family. You may only have one son, so use this as the opportunity to give him the best of all worlds. Names with a heritage, plus a popular name. My youngest son had a middle name of Russell. We called him "Rusty." The kids at school teased him. so he never liked the name, and now goes by his first name. Don't disagree that Spyridon may be a great name in Greek, but kids can be mean, and I'll guarantee that a child with that name will be teased no matter how noble the heritage.

Spyridon is a normal Greek name. If the mother has a problem with it, it's her problem. She can call him: Spiro,Spy, Ron or Don! What is her problem?

I think it is a wonderful, ethnic and historical name and hey what kid wouldn't want Spy for a nick name!

I think Sypridon is an amazing name! If the girl would be named after the maternal grandmother than the boy should be allowed to carry on family tradition with the paternal grandfathers name. It really is quite eloquent.
