The name is different but not horrible. It will help the child build his individualism.

I think Spyridon is a beautifulo name with a beautiful patron saint. Someone with the unusual name of Kseniya -- which most peopel cannot pronounce -- should not be judging the difficulty of saying Spyridon and saying it's bereft of elegance. Having said that, i think if you truly have a hard time saying the name and finding a nichname like Spero that you agree on, than you may want to consider a neutral name. Perhaps dedicate the child to a special saint that you both endear, etc. We named our son Nicholas and not after my father in law Vladimiros and it did not go over well. He's still not speaking to us. Today, so many unique names are circulating -- it's less about it being unusual but more about being a name you both ca nagree on and live with.

both of you need to agree on the name. If you don't like Michael and she doesn't like Spyridon, then you need to come up with a different name you can both agree on. We named our children ethnic names in my husband's ethnicity, but we agreed on them.

I wonder what the future grandfathers think? The things she is saying about her father-in-law's name are beyond disrespectful. the paternal great grandparents named their child and they should be respected for that and he can always shorten it when he goes to school. My ex did not want our son's name to be Richard cause in the past the nick name was Dick (which has negative connotations) but it will bring the child a sense of history at being privileged to be named Spyridon and the family history. I wonder if the mom gets to name his after her dad if he is a boy will she be upset if he chooses to name the first girl after HIS mother??They are agreed on a girls name but if the mom chooses the boys name I would say the father should choose the girls name and use his moms name that is only fair. Bet the wife would not like that as I can imagine her mom in law probably has a weird name as well.

More than reasonable concessions. I would love to meet a Spyridon. I know a dozen Michaels.

Couldn't you compromise a little and call him Spyridon Michael? I have the Greek first name Polish last name combo going. Roll calls are never easy.

If it so important that Spyridon be a part of the name, there are 2 options you should consider. The first is to name the baby Spyridon Michael after both families...possibly call him Michael or Spy. The second is to name your son Michael Spyridon. As an educator, i have to weigh in on different names. Some names people choose do lead to ceaseless teasing and trouble for a child in school. If Spyridon was in the middle, it is still there and still very important. When the child is older, he may not like his first name and use his second name if Spyridon is his first name. My father doesn't like his first name...he has always gone by his middle name. I think that wherever you put Spyridon in your son's name, it is very important. Letting this issue make your blood boil is silly, and not good for the mother. The important thing is to have a healthy baby for you to love. Be blessed and I'll be anxious to know what you choose. Good luck!

Think of the history! I think it is a wonderful name and it will mean more to the child than having some generic name. Trust me there is nothing special about having 8 Jennifer's in my graduating class.

Unusual name in America, but I love keeping historical family names alive.

First born son is named after the father's father if it becomes an issue. Standard tradition.

I love traditional names. There is no such thing as an "American" name. We come from all different backgrounds.
