I agree that "Michael" is a dull name compared with Spiro.

The first born male was always traditionally named after the father or the father's father. I would view this as an insult to my family...... Someday the child will appreciate it and enjoy the difference. He will also feel honored to be named after his grandfather.

Michael is too common, even dogs are named that way

As a Greek american given 'american' names, I whole heartedly agree that you should name your son "Spyridon". My sister and I (3rd generation Greek Americans) have horrible american names like Lindsay and Brooke but our children are names to reflect their heritage: Anastasia, George, Athena, Fotios, Tryphon, Georgia. They wear their names with pride!

I think it's a fantastic name! I personally am in favour of unique names and family tradition. My son is named Lionel after his grandfather and also his uncle. Origianlly I wanted to name him Brant which is my maiden name, nbut my husband was against it, so we compromised. This is what I suggest for you as well - a compromise. Maybe his middle name could be Michael?

Nicholas, You are really being a fool with this petition. You are making your wife look like a fool and you a bully. Yes you may be fond of your fathers name, but it says "Kick my ass." You will be opening yor son to bullying and butt whooping as a young people.

Excuse me? When was the last time you risked your life to bring a baby into this world? Do you honestly think pregnancy and labor are a walk in the park? Do you realize how many women die or become ill when they have a baby? Do you also realize that the mother gives up substantially more of her time, her career opportunities, her chances to improve her education, and her youth to care for the child, whereas not much changes for the father, especially in patriarchal societies? Are you trying to say that the mother doesn't provide for the child financially? Do you realize this is the 21st century, and women now work alongside their husbands to provide for their children's education and well-being? Seems to me like you come form a family where the mother stayed at home. She should have taught you better, then. But I bet you just love your stay-at-home mommy, don't you?

This petition is hilarious though I think some people missed the humor. I think Spyridon is a fantastic name. Yes, some idiots will mispronounce it, but it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes which inspired the naming of my own children: “Give your daughters difficult names. Give your daughters names that command the full use of tongue. My name makes you want to tell me the truth. My name doesn’t allow me to trust anyone that cannot pronounce it right.”
