I suggest a middle name of Michael, and that the child be reffered to by his middle name. That way you both win.

There are too many Michael's in this world, and that's the truth!

The name is awesome. He'll change what he is called later in life if he chooses and that choice should be respected by both parents. Let the man keep his tradition. Michael is also a gender neutral name. Why not Spyridon Michael? Or if it is a daughter you could still call her Michael. No matter, I love the name Spyridon. Too many common names out there. I think it should be a mutual decision so it's sad that it isn't. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It's the child that matters, not the name.

You should probably use both names as a first and middle name but I support your desire to name your son after your father. The whole "barbaric names" argument is a bit foolish and your wife can point out that there have been a ton of famous Michael's

I worked as a nurse in the OB department of a very large city hospital for many years. One of the jobs I did there was assist with birth certificates. I expressed two rules to parents: 1) If other people can't spell it or pronounce it, forget it! This eliminates Spyridon- sorry Dad. 2) If it is one of the 10 most common names in the United States, rethink your choice! OK Mom check the stats & you will be surprised to see that Michael ranks at #4 over the last 100 years. Perhaps it is time for both Mom & Dad to look a little further up their family trees. I am sure there are many other beautiful names to consider. Who knows? They might just find one they can agree on!

Rise Spyridon. You shall no longer be known as Michael for you have beene redubbed. You carry your grandfather's name and with it his spirit. You are supreme. NEVER. BACK. DOWN.

You are a 37 year old man, grow up! A petition because you can't agree with your wife on something? From what I read you are demanding that your wife respect your authority in naming the child, but after being married nearly 20 years I can tell you that respect needs to be given and earned. There is definitely a bad undercurrent in your marriage when you would be so disrespectful of your wife and her heritage to say nonsense such as; "Counterpoint 2: This is more than fair. Should Mrs. Soukeras name both children according to her wishes, the marriage, not unlike modern day Belarus, ceases to be a democracy (the concept of which was borne by the brilliant minds of the Ancient Greeks) but rather an authoritarian dictatorship." You have time, forget about naming the baby for now and go get some marriage counseling so that instead of playing 'tug of war' over things in your marriage you can actually be a united front.

If it is a son, why not combine the names and name him either Spyridon Michael or Michael Spyridon and call him Mike. Sounds like a good compromise. Hopefully it will be a girl so that the arguments can cease.

Being of a similar nationality to Nicholas I will tell you that the first born son most always carries the paternal grandfathers name. My first born son is named after my father but my second son is named after my father-in-law to carry on the family name. By the way the names are Nikola and Ilija.

Naming him after the grandfather is traditional, not archaic. I feel Spyridon Michael Soukeras sounds good together. Both of your fathers will be honored and the name is unique.
