I assume that if you are both Orthodox Chrisitans, you will be going to church and your son will be in Sunday School. He will be comfortable being call Spiro as a nickname. Why aren't you naming him Constantine? You could call him Dean as a nickname. Where you name after your godfather?

spyridonas is a great name and not as common as Michael although they are both great names I would vote for Spyridon!

How did she not understand this was part of the deal or marrying greek? I'm GO married to an irish catholic and we still named our son after his father. I don't even see a point for you to need a petition to name your son following family, not even just greek, but FAMILY tradition. Does she think she gets to choose different godparents than your koumbari for the baby, too?

if the mother gets to name her daughter after her mother, I don't see why he dad can't name his boy after his father. If this were just an argument, I'd say be fair, name the boy Spyridon and show some respect for the husband and father-in-law. But, because this is a pregnant lady we're talking about, so under the circumstances, it would be better for the dad to quit insisting. pregnant women need emotional support for the well-being of the mother and fetus. So, for argument'a sake, Spyridon. But for love of the wife and baby, Michael.

Bravo Nicholas! I too, am Greek and it has always been tradition to name your first born after the husband's father or mother. I saw on the Today Show how they were pronouncing Spyridon and it made me laugh. My son has a very difficult first name and we, too, lived in Astoria. No one was having a problem with the pronounciation....because mostly everyone was Greek. I hope you keep your ground, the second child can be called whatever your wife wants. Good luck.
